solar-assisted hybrids

I just stumbled across an interesting web site that sells solar panels which install on the roof of a car. I've long thought that would be the perfect place for a solar panel setup. This company has come up with a system that will assist a standard or hybrid engine providing up to 29% improved fuel economy (at least, according to their site). This page details which vehicles can currently be fitted with the solar assist panels. Our Ford Escape Hybrid is on the list, though the image on that page is of the gas-guzzling six cylinder standard Escape.

I like this idea as it extends upon the hybrid's use of excess energy to charge its batteries. Instead of plugging into the power grid to charge the batteries and gain increased non-fuel time, it utilizes available space to supplement power with solar energy.
