just what we need: personal universes

submitted by daniel on mon, 2006-08-21 08:38.

Here's an excellent solution for overpopulation: Sentido.tv has a fascinating article that discusses efforts by Japanese physicists to create "baby" universes in a lab. Just think, we could provide people with their own universes in which to store their stuff - and themselves.

The only catch is that once the baby universe is created it automatically seals itself off from this one. Ah well, there has to be some sacrifice in the name of science, right?

realclimate blog

Real Climate Banner SectionI just stumbled upon a site that specializes in providing scientific commentary on developing climatological stories, aimed at "the interested public and journalists". Al Gore has been described by The Green Guy as "a walking, talking live version of the excellent Real Climate blog run by scientists". In addition to the blog, there's a forum for "the interested public and journalists" to discuss issues covered in less depth by the site's bloggers.

solar power store

It's shocking what you can find just a short distance (well, about 100 km, or 60 mi) from your home! According to that amazing source of information, Treehugger, there's a place called Solar Power Store which sells, oddly enough, everything you need to set up a solar system (!) for yourself. There's a handy list of common loads that lets you calculate roughly what your electrical needs are, helping you decide on the size of the system you need. Susan and I will definitely be visiting this place! As a bonus, it's located in a very nice part of Ontario: the Muskokas. Sounds like there's an excellent weekend coming up!

do-it-yourself green website

YourGreenDream Logo

YourGreenDream is an excellent site that describes itself as a "free source of information on how to create your own homemade projects on solar, hydro, wind, tidal, geothermal or other green power". There are articles on various aspects of sustainable energy, a "diy instructions" section detailing home-built projects you can try, a forum, and even a small store where you can order parts for some of the projects... from Australia. Shipping may be an issue for us here in Canada.

The site's a bit sparse at the moment, but it has potential. It's nice to see that a website like this exists at all; it shows a widening awareness of alternative energy sources.

a new article on environmental strategies

submitted by daniel on thu, 2006-06-29 22:31.

I've just posted a new entry to the articles section called "Ten things we have done to help the environment". It's primarily a list of the steps Susan and I have taken to reduce our impact on the environment. Take a look and see if there's something in there you hadn't thought to do or perhaps didn't even know about. Feel free to let me know what you think of the article. I would appreciate any comments.
