smoking in cars

I rarely laugh out loud at letters to the Ed., but this one in the Chronicle Herald did it for me. Wolfville, Nova Scotia, recently became the first jurisdiction in Canada to ban smoking in cars carrying children. That prompted Harry Flemming, well known local columnist/pundit, to recount this anecdote in a letter to the ed.

“In the late 1930w and early 40‘s. my mother, father, younger sister and I frequently took the dirt road in the family 1931 Packard from Truro towards Tatamagouche to stop at Waugh’s River to visit relatives.

“My father had a Chirchillian cigar habit and, because of the dust, kept the car windows closed. Little sister Carolyn invariable puked. Father John’s concern was limited to” “What’s wrong with the little girl?”

“Carolyn is alive and well today, at 71, no thanks to her father.”

Harry's known for his direct, waste no words style - and wit. What a fine piece of writing. I'm chuckling again.
