urban fauna

A chicken & egg argument reads today's headline in our Chronicle Herald.

"A suburban Halifax family fined $500 and ordered to get rid of their 13 pet chickens says HRM is making much a-cock-a-doodle-do about nothing…"

Another chicken family in metro recently sent their birds to Heliotrust for a country holiday rather than pay the fine.

Maybe they (the hens that is) would do better on their own on the freeway.

Of course it's hard to ban seagulls and crows and chickadees, although Halifax might try, our council passed a cat bylaw they can't enforce.

Food security is OK, but not in our backyard!

I know a place where the whole city is a bird sanctuary and free range chickens are a bit controversial and colorful as well... possibly related to a history of illegal cockfighting and gambling instead of wholesome omelets and sunny side ups.

Hmm, I also happen to know a house on the market down there with key lime and papaya trees bearing fruit in the backyard...
