truly biodegradable compost bucket bags

If you're like me, you love to compost, but hate to deal with the kitchen compost bucket. We have a stainless steel container with lid, but I will wait until it is overflowing before dashing out to the composter, and by that time all sorts of lovely things are growing in the can. The nasty part is cleaning the container AFTER emptying it on the heap. But I think I've found a marvelous solution. Lee Valley sells a compost bucket bag. And this ain't no ordinary bag either. Unlike some other products that 'claim' to be biodegradable but are in fact still plastic that just breaks down into teeny tiny bits of plastic (which hang around for millenia), the Lee Valley bag is truly biodegradable. And that's because it's NOT plastic. It is made from GMO-free cornstarch! It looks like a plastic bag, feels softer than plastic with a silky finish, and you can toss it with the contents straight onto the compost pile! It then immediately starts to breakdown from the microorganisms in the heap. They claim you can also use them to store fridge produce because they allow moisture out. I just bought a roll of 25 bags to test out($7.50 - but a roll of 100 is only $19.95) and will post my findings over the next week or so. Stay tuned! Well that's just perfect! We have exactly the same problem with what is probably exactly the same stainless steel Lee Valley compost bucket. :) This sounds like an excellent solution to that odoriferous problem.

Of course, if you're feeling a bit peckish you could always fry up some of those bags for a tasty treat!
