just say pneu to pneumonia

Daniel and I have spent the last 9 days, battling pneumonia. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if only one of us had it... but no it had to be both.

If you have ever had pneumonia you will understand why someone would blog about getting sick. This is no ordinary illness. And I hope I never go through this again. I also hope no one else gets this.

You start off perfectly normal, just going about your day, and notice that you haven't had any food all day, and you have no desire for it. It does not make you ill, but the appetite part of the brain, seems to switch off. Then the strange weakness all over where going down the stairs to my basement was agonizing. A low grade fever appears and makes you hot and cold and shivering. Then it happens, the coughing. The relentless coughing which made it impossible for us to talk to each other.

I'm guessing most people can relate to this as it is very similar to the flu. But then the bone crushing leg pain starts. It is excruciating. The leg pain is pure agony and is like some medieval torture device. The lymph nodes are all swollen at this point, and any movement causes you pain.
We were told our pneumonia was bacterial and we had to take a really super strong antibiotic, that had nasty side effects. There was a metal like taste to everything. And it effected our sleep. We are still taking the antibiotic, and will continue to for a few more days.
Every part of me aches- probably from coughing. We were pathetic poor things. Now we are on the mend. And the sooner it's gone the better.

There are many types of pneumonia, and our one is the mildest of the bunch. Twenty years ago I had viral pneumonia, the one you can't treat with antibiotics. I was in very bad shape with that one. This was mild compared to the viral episode.

I will probably always remember this experience, even if I don't want to.

'Have to agree, I had it a few years ago. My one, hopefully only one, round of antibiotics so far this winter has been for one of those jam packed sinus things that just don't retreat.. fevers, incredible head pain and non stop blowing your nose. I have to say it made me think of your chronic pain descriptions and I really wondered how anyone could survive them.

After hearing so many people say they use COLD-FX (a ginseng extract) I have tried it a few times when I felt something coming on, and it seemed to work. There was a bit of a "control" in one instance, my daughter who had acquired the same thing about the same time and didn't take COLD-FX, got it. No replicates of course, so this is flimsy evidence. In the case of the jam packed sinus thing, I didn't take FX until it was well established. I felt it coming again about a month later (recently), took the FX and.. it seems to have dissipated. They advise 3 x 3 capsules on day 1, 3 x 2 on day 2 and 3 x 1 on day 3. It cost $9.70 for one pack of 18 capsules, but if you buy them in larger quantities you can reduce th cost to about $5 per treatment. So as long as it seems to work, I will keep taking it.

even cheaper and easy treatment appears to be nasal irrigation with salt water according to Jan 22 ScienceDaily news release

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080121164118.htm

Last July they reported that the treatment was effective for chronic sinusitis symptoms

Who could predict that right after reading the science daily articles I would come to syrinx and find david's post? Jungian synchronicity, hand of the flying spaghetti monster, or just coincidence? You decide, I'd better go and wash out my sinuses with my neti pot now.

Interestingly enough, someone gave me a neti pot for Christmas and I had forgotten about it, so that's a good reminder to try it out. Thanks! One of the reasons I love ocean swimming is the total cleansing of the sinuses, so I'll think about that (ocean swimming) as I shoot salt water.

using the neti pot myself this week... feels good, but not all that productive, as the physicians say about coughs and such...
I used to swim in the ocean often as a child, but now the beaches are closed for swimming more often than not in my home town, due to e coli contamination. Still sunny, though. recently got a post forwarded of a youtube video of a nostalgic documentary (need a hankie for that one)- will have to post it along with links to more recent videos of what it has become...(will need a stomach pump after those). Cheers.
