as if one needs another headache...

Folks at WebMD tell me that middle aged men with migraines (great name for a band, BTW), are at increased risk for heart attacks.

Middle-aged men who suffer from migraine headaches are 42% more likely to have a heart attack when compared with nonsufferers, according to a new analysis of the 20,084 men participating in the Physicians' Health Study.

"Until we understand more about the association between migraines and heart disease, patients with migraines should think about how to mitigate other known heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, smoking, and obesity," says researcher Tobias Kurth, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

The study comes on the heels of other research by Kurth and colleagues that showed that older women with migraines -- especially those accompanied by neurologic visual disturbances known as aura -- had a higher risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.

I've been told that angina is the first warning symptom to watch for in migraine/heart related conditions for both men and women. Where this becomes a problem - is that our first line of defense - Imatrix often produces a side effect that is similar to symptoms of angina. The second problem is if in fact we have angina, we can't take nitro to reduce the symptoms, because in fact nitro can trigger what is considered to be the worst migrine you can ever have.

So if I buy some nitro capsules from the pharmacy/chemist/drugstore/local shaman-medicine man/woman (Hey, this is Texas, after all) and take one if I have some chest pain, then:

a. If nothing happens, I probably just have heartburn/"gas" and my headaches are not considered "migraines"
b. If the chest pain goes away, I probably have angina and
c. If I get the worst headache I've ever had, then I've got migraines
d. If both b. and c., call the clinic

SpongeBob will try this little experiment and let you know what the results are...
