I was surprised on this 23rd of October to see a bee very busy on some wild raspberry bushes in Point Pleasant Park and more surprised to see new flowers being produced and new raspberries ripening - I managed to get a few (I had to compete with many birds and they weren't shy about it). My google search for "Raspberries in October" led to a wonderful poem by Edward Harkness They're the sweetest, but I think the berries I was seeing were the result of a second flowering induced by an extended (warm) fall as the normal flowering time is July. (So far this fall, we have had only one real frost, that a couple of days ago.) |
