Salvia penstemonoides , or Big Red Sage, or Penstemon Sage (and not Cedar Sage as incorrectly identified earlier). Just got started blooming in my yard in June - which is exactly when it is supposed to. Just goes to show you can't always depend on what you see in the database - sometimes you have to go down to the wildflower center and look at their plants with the sign in front of them to make the right identification.
