syrinx

Saw this fellow pumping up its wings recently - at least that's what it looked like what it was doing - just sitting on the side of the garage door. Haven't seen it since. Never did open its wings while I was there. Haven't been able to find it in any books or online yet. Anyone know what this is? could even be some other kind of insect, i suppose. red grasshopper? pink daquiri?
