Yesterday was my mother's 73rd birthday.

Besides having the best name anyone could ever have - she is just great. My mother's name is Flora Coull. It is pronounced cool if you are not familiar with that spelling. That name is the envy of all. It is classically northern Scottish and she suits it.

She is the most original thinking person I have ever known. A feminist before the word was invented, she would never be put in her place and had no need for role models or predefined ideals. She never drank or smoked nor had any interest in cooking or keeping a simple house. She was good looking and knew it, but did not flaunt it in obvious ways. Neither ambitious or lazy she just was. Loved animals and silly humor, she was what every kid needs growing up. She was the kind of mother that would run into a skipping rope and join in.. instead of baking cookies. And usually she got whistled at by guys driving by or construction workers. We never saw other mothers get that attention ever. She had boyfriends after my father left this world in '76 but never remarried. He is not someone you replace.

Spring in the Forest - Fiddlehead Unfolds
