Just a couple of these little bees working the asters... not sure whether they're actually honeybees or perhaps one of the solitary bees.

colony collapse syndrome - end of agriculture?

Bees are still dying for a number of different reasons.
Gina Covina writing for Terrain,, points to malnutrition as a side effect of industrial agriculture, with the almond industry in California as a specific factor.

on the bright side, I have seen some honeybees recently in the garden - just today, (25 October) observed one pollinating the newly opened asters.
