As of September 27, we are told, the old solar disk has been free of "spots" for about 3 out of every 4 days so far in 2008. While it hasn't been a hotbed of activity, that's not a bad thing:

"By monitoring the sun's vibrating surface, helioseismologists can probe the stellar interior in much the same way geologists use earthquakes to probe inside Earth.

start of a new solar flare cycle

The first sunspot of the year apparently signals the beginning of a new 11 year cycle of heightened solar activity.

Highly charged material ejected from the sun during solar storms causes power outages and disrupts satellite communications that can affect everything from taking cash out of an ATM to chatting on a cell phone. In addition, this solar cycle will be the first to occur in an era when global positioning system, or GPS, technology is widely used

solar-assisted hybrids

I just stumbled across an interesting web site that sells solar panels which install on the roof of a car. I've long thought that would be the perfect place for a solar panel setup. This company has come up with a system that will assist a standard or hybrid engine providing up to 29% improved fuel economy (at least, according to their site). This page details which vehicles can currently be fitted with the solar assist panels. Our Ford Escape Hybrid is on the list, though the image on that page is of the gas-guzzling six cylinder standard Escape.
