The International Polar Year is a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009. I have never heard of this project before, and was amazed to learn that it is not new.

First International Polar Year was in 1882-1883
Second International Polar Year was in 1932-1933
This close cousin: The International Geophysical Year 1957-58
Third International Polar Year - 2007-2009
