passion flower, flower with carpenter bee, passion flower vine heart or arrowhead shaped leaf (depends on your personality, I guess), photo illustrating the rule of thirds and composition illustrating how the visual reader starts at the top left, moves to the right, comes around to the bottom left, and the leaf and unopened buds lead you back up to the top left again. Or so the photographer thinks.

We planted several varieties last year, early, mid, and late season blooming, but February seems a little early, even for this latitude...
later: went to the TyTy Nursery site, where we bought these bushes, and they say the Tifblue variety has been known to bloom as early as February in Georgia. And most of Georgia, if not all, is north of our little corner of central Texas. So not so surprising after all.

hummingbirds and butterflies like the blossoms on the autumn sages or salvia greggii. They grow all over the South of the US. after the blossoms go to seed, it helps to cut the plants back to encourage new growth and more flowers.
