hybrid

favorite dog info site

Dog Breed Information Center is my all time favorite site on one of my favorite topics. Dogs.
The site is a nuts and bolts site dedicated to learning about all kinds of dogs. No surprise but I go to the hybrid dog link every time.

There are far too many dog sites that condemn the cross breeds and would never list them. Hard to believe but it's true. Dan and I have been on the receiving end of some looks, comments and actions that show some people are against the hybrid dogs. We have seen looks of disgust over our dogs... which to me is verging on a fascist mentality. Ethnic purity kinda gives me the creeps - . There is nothing wrong with wanting a purebred dog, but when you hear the comments from breeders, it gets weird. The one comment I find the most absurd is when breeders talk about labradoodles and other hybrids as the result of dog breeders who are only in it for the money. So does that mean that breeders of purebred dogs are donating all their puppies? What a bunch of hypocrites. They are the worst offenders of breeding disease into dogs that look "perfect". And they chop off tails, and crop ears for cosmetic purposes as common practice. It is so cruel. How are they superior to hybrid dog breeders? They are not. Their obsession with purity is really weird, they sound like the royal family. And just like Prince Charles the dogs are not so bright.

solar-assisted hybrids

I just stumbled across an interesting web site that sells solar panels which install on the roof of a car. I've long thought that would be the perfect place for a solar panel setup. This company has come up with a system that will assist a standard or hybrid engine providing up to 29% improved fuel economy (at least, according to their site). This page details which vehicles can currently be fitted with the solar assist panels. Our Ford Escape Hybrid is on the list, though the image on that page is of the gas-guzzling six cylinder standard Escape.

ten things we have done to help the environment

Over the past several years, Susan and I have been working at becoming more environmentally responsible. It started with organic gardening, and since then we've been able to do a few more things that let us sleep a little better at night. We feel it is our responsibility to lead by example, so I've come up with a list of things we've done, or are in the process of doing:

terrapass: offsetting carbon dioxide emissions

I found a fascinating program that allows you to offset the effect of your car's carbon dioxide emissions by purchasing something called a TerraPass. The funds thus acquired are invested in renewable energy projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This effectively nullifies your car's CO2 contribution by reducing output from other sources. Ford has teamed up with TerraPass to market this idea to Ford vehicle owners. Apparently, Ford derives no revenue from the program.

driving below the speed limit

I find it fascinating to see how severely upset people get when they come upon someone having the nerve to drive the speed limit. I used to drive about 20 km/h over the speed limit on a regular basis. I got very few speeding tickets over the years, and I never had an accident as a result of my speeding. But I was simply very, very lucky.
