Out taking pictures of Turk's Caps and a Large Orange Sulphur butterfly and a Gulf Fritillary butterfly when this Anna's or Black-Chinned hummingbird took a moment from its nectar gathering among the Turk's Caps and checked out the large animal in its territory. So I definitely know that Turk's Caps are a hummingbird attractant, in addition to the Flame Acanthus. Only had a 35x80 lens for flower closeups, but took some 10-20 foot shots of the bird anyway. sipping in stop motionsubmitted by robertkamper on sat, 2008-08-02 18:05.

Shake a tail feather... page 269 of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America 4th edition differentiates this specimen as Anna's rather than, say, a black-chinned hummingbird, another possible suspect. There may be another species out there for all I know, they're so fast and small, it's difficult to get a good snapshot. Today I was sitting on the deck with camera and this one came and hovered next to me - snap snap - then in front of me - snap snap - (nice pictures of the arbor beams, one of a ghostly blur way out of focus) and then went and rested in the huisache for a while. tags: wildlife hummingbird annas hummingbird feedersubmitted by robertkamper on thu, 2008-07-10 15:27.

It's a Southern Dogface, to be more exact. I finally shot one of these (two, really, the other is even more out of focus on another flower a little further back. Well, at least now I know what one type of yellow butterfly has been flying around in the neighborhood is. I think there are some that are both bigger and smaller - maybe I'll be lucky enough to get a picture of one of them, too. One day. tags: butterflies beatles wildlife monarch photography beethoven hummingbird cardinal sulphur southern dogface bach louis armstrong |
