Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is Oct. 5-11

Now in its 25th year, Mental Illness Awareness Week provides communities across the country with an opportunity to acknowledge the human and economic toll taken by mental illnesses and to celebrate new treatment advances. Most Americans know someone with a mental illness. Mental illness can be caused by genetic, biological or environmental factors.

In 2005, Edge magazine asked this question - "WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS TRUE EVEN THOUGH YOU CANNOT PROVE IT?" - and got some really interesting input from their contributers.

I have been thinking about this ever since and finally I can contribute something I believe is true but can't prove. While not in the same league as the more impressive contributions made at Edge, I think this counts ;)

Being tired, creates a visual field, a sound or scent, that my dog recognizes, and responds to. She reminds me of the way you see service dogs behave - as they "read" when illness is about to strike or something needs to be changed. She will not take no for an answer. Instead of a seeing eye dog, she is a sleeping eye dog.
