social-cultural differences in recognizing contributions to society

submitted by robertkamper on thu, 2008-07-03 14:51.

The Order of Canada was just awarded to 75 people selected by a committee headed by the Supreme Court Justice. This appears to be an annual or semi-annual awards ceremony to honor achievement in a diverse range of areas of activity.
note: After posting the snarky comments below, I looked up Wikipedia's entry and found out that the Official Site linked below is 4 years out of date. The US Senate has a more up to date listing of the US honorees at

http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/reference/two_column_table/Presidential_Medal_of_Freedom_Recipients.htm

snarky comments follow:
The last US Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony was at the end of 2004, when certain individuals related specifically to an event (the 2003 Iraq invasion and occupation) were honored, in a break from the tradition of the past five decades. And unless there are some surprise announcements, it would seem that during this second term, this president has found no one deserving of the honor...or hasn't been able to get the mission of getting a list of recipients together accomplished.

Mythbusting Canadian Health Care -- Part I
By Sara Robinson

I'm both a health-care-card-carrying Canadian resident and an uninsured American citizen who regularly sees doctors on both sides of the border. As such, I'm in a unique position to address the pros and cons of both systems first-hand. If we're going to have this conversation, it would be great if we could start out (for once) with actual facts, instead of ideological posturing, wishful thinking, hearsay, and random guessing about how things get done up here.
