not so long ago I counted 6 fawns, 2 bucks, and 4 does packing down the deer corn. Today just 3 does and 2 fawns when I set out the nibbles. Later on a couple of fawns showed up - whether the same two looking for seconds or two others, I don't know - so I tossed another bowl out for them.

Took this pic of one of the bucks over the backyard fence the other day. Actually saw at least 4 fawns at one time in the herd a couple weeks ago. Since then have only seen 2 or 3 at a time. Today saw a dead fawn on the side of the main road. I'm sure it probably jumped out of nowhere and the driver couldn't avoid it and didn't even see it. Today when I came home a doe and a fawn were out back waiting for some corn - by the time I got done there were 2 fawns, 2 bucks, and 3 does.

2008-Jan-30 - Might even be an escaped hamster from the 'hood...
2008-Jan-28 - Those little rounded ears just don't look like a rabbit. Looked into Audubon Guide to North American Mammals and the closest I could come was the Pika, but supposedly it doesn't live this far east (New Mexico, maybe, which is west of Texas). It didn't seem to have a long tail, so I don't think it was a vole or a wood rat. I have seen rabbits in the woods before, so naturally assumed that that was what this critter was. Oh well...
